SMITH, Arthur Edward(1880-1978) The most influential figure in the history of Australian violin making. Worked for Jeffreys & Sons at Maldon, Essex for four years and produced about 20 violins. Came to Melbourne in 1909 and worked there for a few years, then visited San Franscisco before returning to Sydney around 1913 where he formed A.E. Smith & Co.
