Workmanship generally haphazard. Some violins have edges inlaid with mother-o’-pearl. Chocolate-brown or reddish varnish, both of common appearance. Made a few superior ’cellos, priced at £25 (1920) on account of a responsively full tone, Strad model. Some instruments bearing his name have come from German factories.
