Tomasz Jan Kowalski was born on the 21st of November 1966. Since his early childhood music has been his passion. As a teenager he took up a job as a cabinet-maker. At the age of 21, after a few years of work, he became a master cabinet-maker. In the year 1987 his furniture were presented on an international exposition in Belgium. As a carpenter he dealt with maintenance and renewal of antique furniture. However this has not been his passion. He dreamt of crafting musical instruments. After some independent attempts at luthierie he began studies under the direction of Jan Bobak in 1991. He had been working there for nearly ten years. During that period he had made instruments for the famous American workshop William Harris Lee. Shortly after that,in the year 1995, he became a member of the Polish Violin Makers Association. While visiting many European workshops he became acquainted with many regional techniques of crafting and repair of string instruments. In 1999 he founded his own workshop called “Luthierie Kowalscy”. During his career he took part in many exhibitions where he presented his work. His instrumets are played by many famous orchestras in Tokio, Chicago, Helsinki, Berlin, Vienna, Moskow, Warsow and many other across the globe. His main assets are various techniques of decorative incrustation, intarsia and carving. By adding passion and vast knowlege form various fields of expertise to the aforementioned techniques, the instruments created by mr. Tomasz posess artistic, as well as, spiritual value.
