Founding Member, Universal Strings Society of America.
Maestro Lloyd Liu was born in Hunan province in 1933. He followed his father Liu Ting-Fang and the family to Hong Kog in 1948. They settled in Argentina in 1953. He took a strong liking to woodworkingas a child, and was a violin making student of the emigre German master Wilhelm hufenreiter. He was a violin student of Persinger at the Jul1iard School, New York(1958), but maintained a pronounced interest in luthiery including bow making. He maintained and repaired
instruments for fellow students at Julliard. He was taken as a student by the world famous luthier Simone Sacco血, with whom he leared much about the essences of Cremonese violin making.
In 1968 he was in partnership with William Salchow in a violin shop, but opened his own shop on 57th Street three years later. He was then most well known as a bow
maker, counting among his clients Arthur Grumiaux, Jimmy Lin and Zhang Li-Guo. Following an auto accident in 1980,Lloyd Liu halted bow making while recuperating in Hong Kong, there tending to his family business (not musical!) with China. He settled in LosAngeles in 1987, resuming violin and bow making. Maestro Liu is also an excellent violin maker, and starting in 1999 he produced a series of del Gesu copies (based on Sir Yehudi's 1742 'Lord Wilton' violin) that are fantastic works of art. He sojourned briefly in New York state in semi-retirement (2001-2004), and now resides in Shanghai, China.
