Little is known about Giovanni Tononi's origins, but we do know that he worked as a violin maker in Bologna in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He was heavily influenced by the work of the Amati family in neighbouring Cremona, who had dominated the craft for the last century or so. The high quality of the materials and varnish which he used, combined with his excellent workmanship, make his instruments popular with experts and musicians alike.
